2018 Positional Top 10: Right Field

Image
Matt Linder Right field is an extremely top heavy position, with a clear top four players.  After those guys, the final six spots are wide open.  There is a combination of stars, emerging players and established veterans.  Enjoy this final top 10 installment! Jim McIsaac - Getty Images 1. Aaron Judge Although it was tough to rank the Yankees’ phenom atop this list after only his rookie season, that one season was impossible to ignore.  Judge was the unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year and finished second in the AL MVP voting.  The 25-year old smashed 52 home runs, second only to Giancarlo Stanton, and finished third in OBP (.422).  Keep in mind, these eye-popping numbers include an extremely poor month of August.  Also, despite his mountainous 6’7” 280 lb frame, Judge is a very good defensive right fielder.  There is no reason to believe Judge will not produce at a superstar level again in 2018. 2018 Positional Top 10: Centerfield

Image
Matt Linder The centerfield position has an interesting mix of players.  It is spearheaded by an all-time great and followed by a blend of emerging stars and breakout performers.  The players ooze with athleticism, making it one of the most exciting positions in baseball.  Enjoy! Frank Jansky - Icon Sportswire 1. Mike Trout Trout is the best player in baseball. Period.  He has won two MVPs, finished second three other times (at least two of which he was robbed) and he is only 26 years old.  Had he played a full season in 2017, the Angels’ centerfielder would have likely won a third MVP award.  It is almost a waste of time to provide the specific stats and slashlines for Trout.  Just go to his Baseball Reference page and check out all of the bold print. Denis Poroy - Getty Images 2. Charlie Blackmon The Rockies’ centerfield was a late bloomer.  He didn't become an everyday player until his age 27 season in 2014.  Since then, Blackmon h

2018 Positional Top 10: Left Field

Image
Matt Linder Left field has become a platoon-heavy position, in which different players split time.  Also, in general, teams are beginning to use their outfielders more fluidly, moving guys between the three spots throughout the season.  This trend is most pronounced in left field.  Last year, both right field and center field had 20 everyday players who received at least 400 plate appearances, while left field only had 12 players to reach that threshold.  The position is certainly top-heavy with a cast of impact players atop the list.  Enjoy! Thomas A. Ferrara - Newsday 1. Giancarlo Stanton New team, new position… still number one.  Stanton will mostly DH for the Yankees in 2018, but when he plays the field, it will be in left.  The reigning NL MVP is coming off an all-time great season in which he hit .281/.376/.631 with 59 home runs… 59!!!!  Although you cannot expect him to repeat that level of production in 2018, it is fairly safe to say that he will still be t

2018 Positional Top 10: Shortstop

Image
Matt Linder The current crop of shortstops might be the most exciting position in baseball.  The time of glove-only shortstops is over; these guys are impact players on both sides of the ball.  Nobody on this list is over 30 years old, and the top four players have already established themselves as perennial MVP candidates.  Enjoy! Bob Levey - Getty Images 1. Carlos Correa In a loaded position, the defending World Series champion has earned the slight edge.  Despite only playing 109 games in 2017, Correa still finished second among shortstops in WAR (6.3).  Last season, he hit .315/.391/.550 with 24 home runs.  The combination of power and plate discipline is a nightmare for opposing pitchers.  Correa pairs this explosive offensive production with very solid defense.  At only 23 years old, Correa is already a bonafide superstar. 2018 Postional Top 10: Third Base

Image
Matt Linder The current crop of third basemen is unique.  The position has the unusual combination of being both top heavy and deep.  There are stars atop the list, in addition to having close to twenty players worthy of top ten consideration.  Enjoy! Ezra Shaw - Getty Images 1. Kris Bryant You know Bryant is great, because hitting .295/.409/.537 with 29 home runs is considered a down year.  The Cubs’ third baseman finished first (7.7) and third in WAR (6.1) in 2016 and 2017, respectively.  Bryant also increased his walk rate while decreasing his strikeout rate last season.  At only 26 years old, I expect the home run total to rebound to his 2016 level as he continues to develop. David Zalubowski - AP 2. Nolan Arenado It is always tough to compare a Rockie to other players because Arenado’s home ballpark certainly helps his offensive numbers.  With that being said, he led all third basemen in OPS (.959) and WAR (7.2) in 2017 and even Coors Field
