We were staying in Paris: Neymar off to PSG

We've heard for a long time that the transfers market in Europe has spiraled out of control. Money is everywhere in European soccer and it has never been truer than this summer. Barcelona's $260 million buyout close in Neymar's contract was not a calculated number. It was thrown in there because no one thought it would ever be triggered, but yesterday it was. And with that Barcelona was given a taste of their own medicine that no one could believe.
And with that one of the most exciting players in the world is chartering a new chapter in his already storied career, on a world record transfer fee that absolutely shattered last year's number of $116 million for Paul Pogba. He already has a champions league title, La Liga title, a Copa del Rey triumph to his name along with a gold medal for his country and 105 goals in 186 appearances for Barca. The move comes as a shock. There was no indication that one of the most promising talents in the world would look to move on from one of the world's largest clubs at the beginning of the summer and the transfer seemed to materialize very quickly. This leaves Barcelona shell shocked, PSG delighted and the rest of us in awe.
The move has been met with a large amount of criticism toward the player and rightly so. There is a point to be made about it taking guts to leave a club like Barca, but the motivation was clearly there when Neymar will be making 30 million a year in Paris. In moving away from the Nou Camp, he also moves out of the shadow of Leo Messi, giving him the opportunity the form his own legacy as the leader of his team. Individually, he's going to shine in Paris and he's going to dominate a less talented league. With such a high profile move though, he's going to be judged by how PSG does in the Champions League, a competition that the Parisians have struggled with despite their talent.
The transfer's impact does not stop with Neymar. It is surely to set off a chain reaction of moves as Barcelona now have a hole to fill at left wing. This puts Juventus' Paulo Dybala, Liverpool's Phillipe Coutinho and Dortmund's Ousmanne Dembele on serious notice with the Catalonian giants eyeing a replacement. Whatever they do, it will be big as they cannot sit idle while their fierce rivals Real Madrid are coming off of another Champions League triumph as well a league title.
Looking back, Neymar gave us breathtaking soccer to watch and formed one of the greatest attacks in history along side Luis Suarez and Leo Messi. As much as he says that the shocking move was engineered by his own ambition to find a new challenge, it is very difficult to overlook the gargantuan amount of money that will be going his way. But undoubtedly, PSG got their man, Barca lost a superstar and shock waves were sent through the soccer world.
