Scouting Report: Cavan Biggio (TOR)

Jays Journal

Matt Linder

-Physical Description:  Athletic build, V-shaped torso, muscular, minimal room for physical projection
-Swing Mechanics: Quiet load and weight transfer despite a lot of pre-pitch hand movement.  Short stride. Low hand set up. Whippy upper cut

-MLB ETA: 2020
-Present Role (FV): 30
-Ceiling (FV): 50
-Role Description: 2nd division regular
-Risk: Extreme

Hit
-Present: 30
-Future: 40
-Comments: Pull approach, holes in swing especially up in the zone due to upper cut. Patient approach, Plus plate discipline.  Creates good lift.  Handles inside pitches well due to plus bat speed.

Game power
-Present: 50
-Future: 55
-Comments: The combination of quick hands and an upper cut swing produces plus power, especially to the pull side.  He is able to tap into his power during games due to mature approach at the plate

Raw power
-Present: 55
-Future: 60
-Comments: Does not possess prototypical 60 grade raw power size, but he displayed power to all fields in BP due to his aggressive/violent swing and engagement of lower half

Run
-Present: 50
-Future: 45
-Comments: Average runner who can steal bases due to plus instincts and takes advantage of young pitchers’ inexperience with holding runners.  Hustles down the line after contact

Field
-Present: 40
-Future: 45
-Comments: Primarily a second baseman.  I saw him play third and first base.  Tweener defensive profile-fringe range for second, fringe arm for third.  Would be a plus first baseman due to soft hands.  Possesses the athleticism to play left field as well.

Throw
-Present: 45
-Future: 50
-Comments: Average arm - plenty for 2B, fringe for 3B

Athleticism
-Present: Average
-Future: Average

Baserunning
-Present: Average
-Future: Average

Approach
-Present: Average
-Future: Plus

Instincts
-Present: Average
-Future: Plus

-Overall Summary:
There are legitimate questions about his ability to make enough contact at the big league level in order for the power to play.  However, the combination of plate discipline and power should allow Biggio to carve out a starting role.  He could serve as a super utility player, getting a full-season’s worth of at-bats, while playing all over the infield and possibly even left field.
