It was advertised as the biggest match-up in combat sports history. Conor McGregor versus Floyd Mayweather, live from Las Vegas. It was a match made in heaven. Sports talk shows and radio were dominated by it and a Pay Per View price of $100 reflected the high hopes of the promoters. But was it worth it? Did it live up to the gargantuan levels of hype around it? Absolutely.
One of the biggest questions entering the ring was if Conor McGregor would embaress himself against Floyd being that McGregor had never boxed before. He didn't. Conor came out flying in the first few rounds of the fight as he tried to live up to his word of knocking out Mayweather. While he wasn't able to, he was still found a way to land a large amount of punches. In fact, he actually landed 111 of them against Mayweather, more than the 82 that Manny Pacquiao landed in their fight two years ago.
While McGregor came out guns blazing, Mayweather was able to pick his moments. Floyd allowed Conor to exhaust himself as the veteran focused on his defense. And when Mayweather saw his lane, he took it. Piling on lightening quick punches, Floyd was finally able to win by a tenth round TKO.
Mayweather's aggressive approach in the second half of the fight was a huge contributor for the fight delivering the desired entertainment for the millions of viewers glued to their TVs. Instead of trying to take the fight to a decision, Floyd instead took the fight to Conor. And the result was absolutely thrilling. This fight wasn't what is usually heralded as yet another classic Mayweather victory on his journey to 50-0. This one was different, it was personal.
Floyd wanted to make a statement in his last fight of his professional career and silence the incredibly loud doubts hurled at him by team McGregor. And that he did. The speed and precision in which Mayweather used in the final rounds to dispatch McGregor was nothing short of breathtaking.
And while yes, Floyd Mayweather topped off his career with a sprinkle of perfection, he's also now leaving the sport after its popularity has spiked from a fight of such epic proportions. In doing so, he leaves the door open for Conor McGregor, even after his loss, to possibly make the move to boxing and become its next star. And his ego, talent and popularity would be perfect for it.
Floyd Mayweather against Conor McGregor was awesome. It was hard hitting, action packed and absolutely thrilling boxing. It was something that the dying sport of boxing desperately needed. Only time will tell what the impact of this fight will end up being. Could it be the launching pad that boxing has been crying out for for years or just another one off spectacle? But one thing is for sure, the fight lived up to the hype.
